BIS Certificate for Import in India

 A way of ensuring the quality, protection, and reliability of customers' goods is provided by BIS Certification. BIS certification is optional, but for some items taking public health into account, the Indian government made BIS certification mandatory. The process for obtaining a BIS certificate for import in India is discussed in this article.

To stop the increasing import of low-priced, particularly from China, and to boost local production under its Make in India program, the country is tightening the quality controls of electronic products.

According to the notification of DGFT, any business importing or selling electronic products such as cell phones, LED TV or LED lights in the country must register for clearance with the BIS in cases where the imported goods are not being re-exported. The BIS is necessary for clearance.

What is BIS? 

The BIS is a domestic body that maintains quality, safety, and reliability in India through a Product Certification System. The BIS certification does not apply to all goods as a uniform requirement or directive. Alternatively, products are regulated by a specific IS (Indian Standard).

Method for BIS Certification

The BIS product certification scheme is one of the largest in the world with more than 26500 licensees covering more than 900 products. BIS Certification allows licensees to use a popular ISI brand, which stands for quality goods. As per government notification, 90 products are expected to be certified by BIS. BIS is also operating for foreign manufacturers the certification system, whereby international producers are permitted to use the BIS standard mark. Currently, there are over 350 licenses in 40 different countries for more than 50 Indian Standards.

BIS registration documents 

• Online file acknowledgment proof.

• Address evidence including a corporate license and other government records.

• Signed application from the company CEO or letter from the CEO of the authority.

• Brand name certificate registration, a copy of the application (when requested), or a letter of approval from the owner of the brand.

• Affidavit, company, and identification proof of the signing of the Affidavit, if the producer is located abroad for a recognized Indian representative.
